Sequence and Technical Requirements

1.1. Niche Preparation

Cut and excavate a niche in the existing concrete slab to a total depth of 600 mm from finished floor level.

  • Ensure a clean and level base at the bottom of the niche.

1.2. Base Preparation and Reinforcement

Install and thoroughly compact in layers:

First layer: sand

Second layer: gravel or crushed stone

Install the reinforcement cage.

Mandatory requirement:
The reinforcement cage must be installed with a clearance of at least 1 cm between the cage and the bottom of the niche (main slab). Direct contact between the cage and the main slab is strictly prohibited.

1.3. Concreting

Pour M600 (B45) grade concrete.

Key requirement:
After full strength gain and finishing, the top surface of the new slab must be perfectly level with the existing concrete slab (finished floor). Level deviation tolerances must comply with standards for high-precision equipment installation.

1.4. Joint Sealing

Along the perimeter where the new slab adjoins the existing slab, the deformation joint must be filled with mounting foam or polyurethane sealant.

After polymerization, excess material must be carefully trimmed and ground flush with the floor surface.

1.5. Finish Coating (Recommended Option)

It is recommended to apply an epoxy resin-based coating to the new slab surface to create a dust-free, chemically resistant, and wear-resistant finish.

1.6. Marking of Concealed Elements

Mandatory requirement:

Locations of technological voids or cavities within the structure (if provided) must be clearly marked on the finished floor surface in a permanent manner. This marking is required for accurate positioning of microscope supports and to prevent their installation above voids.

Acceptance of Works

Acceptance shall be carried out upon full compliance with this technical specification, with particular attention to level accuracy, the presence of the damping gap, and the application of required markings.

Structural Cross-Section (“Layer Cake”) – Bottom to Top

Layer 0: Existing Conditions

Original concrete slab with a 600 mm deep niche cut into it.

Layer 1: Sand Preparation (~5 cm)

Purpose: Leveling the bottom of the niche and load distribution.

Material: Coarse or medium sand.

Technology: Layered filling with vibration plate compaction.

Layer 2: Crushed Stone Preparation (~10 cm)

Purpose: Drainage layer, increased bearing capacity, final leveling under concrete.

Material: Crushed stone or gravel, 20–40 mm fraction.

Technology: Filling and thorough compaction.

Layer 3: Load-Bearing Reinforced Concrete Slab (~40–45 cm, design height)

The primary structural element.

Reinforcement cage: Steel reinforcement (e.g., A400C, 12–14 mm diameter), tied into a mesh with 150×150 mm or 200×200 mm spacing.

Critical requirement: The cage must be elevated at least 1 cm above the crushed stone layer using plastic spacers (“chairs”). It must not rest on the crushed stone and must not contact the bottom of the niche.

Concrete: M600 (B45) grade, poured as a single monolithic structure with mandatory vibration to eliminate voids.

Leveling: The top surface must be finished precisely flush with the surrounding slab.

Layer 4: Deformation Joint (Perimeter)

Purpose: Separate the new slab from the old slab for independent shrinkage and crack prevention.

Material: Mounting foam or elastic polyurethane sealant.

Technology: After concrete setting, the ~1 cm gap along the perimeter is filled with sealant. Excess material is trimmed and sanded after polymerization.

Layer 5: Finish Coating (2–5 mm)

Recommended: Two-component self-leveling epoxy floor.

Purpose: Increased strength, dust-free surface, chemical resistance, and perfectly smooth working surface.

Marking: After coating application, permanent high-contrast markings (e.g., a circle or cross embedded in the epoxy layer) must be applied precisely above internal voids,

Total design depth: ~5 cm (sand) + ~10 cm (crushed stone) + ~45 cm (concrete) = 60 cm.

Completion period: The work must be completed within 12 calendar days.
